Ontario is considering banning cosmetic pet surgeries – declawing cats, ear cropping dogs, debarking dogs.
Good. About time. Still late. But good.
Letās drop the euphemisms right now.
āļø Declawing Is Amputation, Not Grooming
Declawing isnāt a ānail trim.ā
Itās the amputation of the last bone of each toe.
Imagine losing your fingers at the knuckle. Now imagine walking on that for life.
Common outcomes:
- Chronic pain š¦“
- Arthritis š§
- Litter box avoidance š«
- Increased biting š¬
If this were done to a human – it would be unthinkable. The only reason itās normalized is because cats canāt sue.
š Ear Cropping & Tail Docking: Vanity With Scars
These procedures donāt improve health.
They improve aesthetics.
- āToughā look šāš¦ŗ
- āBreed standardā š
- āTraditionā šŗ
History is not a moral defense. It never has been.
Slavery was tradition too.
š Debarking: When Humans Refuse to Adapt
Debarking damages or removes a dogās vocal cords – not because the dog is sick, but because humans donāt want to hear them.
Instead of:
- Training š§
- Choosing the right breed š”
- Accepting that dogs bark š¶
We silence the animal.
Thatās not ownership. Thatās domination.
š The Rest of the World Already Moved On
Large parts of Europe banned these practices years ago.
Veterinary associations oppose them.
Ethics moved forward.
Ontario isnāt being bold.
Ontario is catching up.
šļø Pets Are Not Accessories
Animals are not:
- Furniture protectors šļø
- Noise-control devices š
- Fashion statements š
If you want a pet, you accept:
- Their instincts
- Their voices
- Their bodies as they are
If thatās too much – donāt get one.
āļø Call It What It Is
This isnāt radical.
This isnāt ideological.
This is basic ethics.
Non-therapeutic harm to animals for human convenience is unacceptable.
Ontario should stop āconsideringā and start legislating.
Animals have already paid the price.
