🛋️ The All in the Family Board

By

A nostalgia act nobody asked for

Once upon a time, there was a TV show called All in the Family.
It was funny because it exposed something already dying:
men who mistook rigidity for wisdom, control for leadership, and discomfort for virtue.

Somewhere along the way, our board mistook that show for a training video.

🎶 “Men Were Men…”

(And problems didn’t exist)

Like Archie Bunker, our board lives in a fantasy era where:

  • Mental health was “nerves”
  • Disability was “inconvenient”
  • Authority was never questioned
  • And if someone struggled, they simply needed to “toughen up”

Back then, feelings weren’t real – they were just something women complained about and men drank through.

The problem?
It’s not 1971.
And this isn’t a sitcom.

🪑 The Living Room Boardroom

In All in the Family, everything happened in the living room.
Everyone sat in their assigned chair.
No one moved.
No one evolved.

Sound familiar?

Our board meetings feel the same:

  • Same people
  • Same thinking
  • Same reflexive hostility to anything new, different, or inconvenient
  • Same confidence with absolutely no self-reflection

They don’t govern – they reenact.

🧠 Progress Is Treated as Insolence

When modern concepts enter the room – disability rights, accommodation, neurodiversity, accountability – the reaction is predictable:

  • discomfort
  • defensiveness
  • mockery dressed up as “common sense”

Like Archie, they don’t ask “Is this right?”
They ask “Why should I have to change?”

Because change, to them, feels like disrespect.

📺 The Joke Was the Point – You’re Not In On It

Here’s the part they missed:

All in the Family wasn’t celebrating Archie Bunker.
It was exposing him.

The audience laughed because:

  • his certainty was brittle
  • his authority was unearned
  • and history was already passing him by

If your worldview survives only by dismissing everyone else as “too sensitive,”
you’re not a leader – you’re a punchline.

⏳ Obsolete Isn’t an Insult – It’s a Description

No one is asking this board to be perfect.
They’re asking them to be current.

To understand that:

  • rights evolve
  • standards rise
  • and governance is not a nostalgia project

You don’t get to run a modern community
with a black-and-white mindset and a laugh track in your head.

🧯 Final Thought

Archie Bunker had an excuse.
He was written that way – to show the limits of his time.

What’s your excuse?

Because this isn’t television.
And there’s no studio audience left to laugh it off.
